During the Olympic Games in London in 2012 there is expected to be over 20 million trips by visitors. Some leading politicians along with Transport for London have already expressed their concerns, recommending some people to avoid the rush on the tube after an event by sticking around and having a beer.
small to medium businesses have been told by the government has now told to sincerely think about their engagements prior to deciding to have a conference meeting with clients or other colleagues due to the problems they might face while the Olympic Games are taking place.
If people do choose to work from home during the two weeks; conference calls can offer an effective and elegant solution to travelling round London to attend meetings and at a fraction of the cost. The transport system in London is already at its capacity and will struggle to cope with the influx of visitors expected.
A statement by the London Assembly’s transport committee earlier this year said journey troubles were one of the major hazards to London 2012, with additional travel piling “extreme demand on a network already creaking at the seams”. Transport Minster Norman Baker told his Civil Servants to make use of conference calls to accumulate time and money on journeys, emphasizes the cost-effectiveness of conference calling, not to mention its green credentials.
“On one or two of the days London Bridge will be very, very crowded and the best thing to do if you happen to be here on the day of the equestrian event in Greenwich is to have a beer before you go home because you won’t be able to get into the station before then,” A leading minister told the committee in a Q&A session at London’s City Hall.
Using conference calls during the Olympics will benefit the individual as well as the business as it will be much less stressful than trying to make meetings or visiting colleagues around the city when the transport links are likely to be extremely unpredictable.
